Start a Google doc, title as follows: "Surname, First Name, Value"
Share with Mr Soltero (slm@ papanui.school.nz) – tick "allow editing"
Note: all draft ideas, notes & research go on the same document
– please only work in this one document that you share with me for this task

For those of you who are new to Art Histories – please follow this quick task:

New Students Only – Your First Writing task involves considering one of the following QUESTIONS:
  • What is Art?, What is Art For?, What does Art Do?
  • If you completed this task last year, click here for a different version.
Follow the steps below:
  • 1. LOOK at the album cover art in this link
  • 2. SELECT one artist/album cover to write about – Right click on the image to "save as" to your desktop, then insert in your doc.
  • 3. READ – Use this link to Read about the exhibition – at the bottom is another link to the book that has been produced for the exhibition.
  • 4. READ - Google search the band, find out a little about them, listen to their music from the album.
  • 5. READ - About the artist who made the album cover
  • 6. WRITE – GETTING ALL IDEAS OUT:
    • A. Select one of the questions above to respond to,
    • B. Make a table for notes as per example below.
      • In each section write everything you can – ie Do Not Edit or Self-Sensor
  • 7. WRITE – SELECTING FROM IDEAS - Scan your notes for a concept that could form the basis of your main idea about the album artwork.
  • 8. WRITE – GATHERING YOUR NOTES TOGETHER – Use the different sections to structure your thoughts. Form the first draft of your opening paragraph by focusing on the main idea you want to discuss in response to the question. The second paragraph should expand on the main idea. When you've got about 400 words follow the steps below.
  • 9. GO TO the Writing Help Tab above. READ. Edit your writing (don't delete anything). When you edit by cutting words out, paste them well below your writing to keep them for later.
  • 10. ARRANGE what you've written into three sections; A: What is it? B; What might it mean? C: Why does it matter? You might like to use these headings at first, but later you'll need to delete those headings so your writing flows.
  • 11. REVIEW – If some sections seem more empty than others, go back and see if you can find out more, read more or simply think – in order to fill out those sections a little more in-depth. Although your submission will be a maximum of 300-400 words.
  • 12. SCAN for what your writing is telling your reader. What it is? What it might mean? for example in consideration of the artist's typical work, and finally Why it matters? for example - to art, music or the audiences of either/both?
